I need a solution

Hi,

Would just like to know if the following solutions can be implemented via cloud? SF, VCS, VVR, VOM and APPHA. A client has their own private cloud and wants to create their DR via cloud as well. They are looking at our solution to help them implement their DR.

Many Thanks!

Veritas Volume Manager problem

I need a solution

We have 2 Sun 3510 arrays each containing three disks. VxVM, on Solaris 10 for SPARC, has been set up to mirror each disk, ie Array 1 Disk 1 is mirrored to Array 2 Disk 1 etc etc. We had a problem with the power to the controller of array 2 and the disks in that array ended up in a disabled and removed state.

The power has now been restored and the disks are now visible to the operating system again. However whatever we try we can not get VxVM to accept the disks.

It can see them but will not re-add them. We have followed the replace disk procedure which fails with the message 'no device available to replace'.

Any suggestions would be most gratefuly received.

I need a solution

Hi,

I need some help with VxVM volumes

I have been requested to restore some data from disks in a volume group

This was how it looked like before

v  lvol4a       -            ENABLED  ACTIVE   2537355264 ROUND   -        gen
pl lvol4a-01    lvol4a       ENABLED  ACTIVE   2537355264 CONCAT  -        RW
sd disk32-01    lvol4a-01    disk32   0        1006534400 0       xiv0_38  ENA
sd disk33-01    lvol4a-01    disk33   0        1006534400 1006534400 xiv0_39 ENA
sd disk35-01    lvol4a-01    disk35   0        524286464 2013068800 xiv0_42 ENA
pl lvol4a-02    lvol4a       ENABLED  ACTIVE   2537355264 CONCAT  -        RW
sd TMP1-01   lvol4a-02    TMP1  0        1019148544 0       xiv0_40  ENA
sd TMP2-01   lvol4a-02    TMP2  0        1308491520 1019148544 xiv0_41 ENA
sd TMP1-02   lvol4a-02    TMP1  1019148544 209715200 2327640064 xiv0_40 ENA

Then the volume was deleted as below

vxedit -g DISKGROUP001  -rf rm  lvol4a

And recreated with same name and plex

vxmake -g DISKGROUP001 vol lvol4a plex=lvol4a-01

Now it looks like this..

v  lvol4a       -            ENABLED  ACTIVE   2537355264 ROUND   -        gen
pl lvol4a-01    lvol4a       ENABLED  ACTIVE   2537355264 CONCAT  -        RW
sd disk32-01    lvol4a-01    disk32   0        1006534400 0       xiv0_38  ENA
sd disk33-01    lvol4a-01    disk33   0        1006534400 1006534400 xiv0_39 ENA
sd disk35-01    lvol4a-01    disk35   0        524286464 2013068800 xiv0_42 ENA

Now I need to mount the data from these disks. which are siting the the VG and are not associated anywhere

disk01      auto:cdsdisk    TMP1      DISKGROUP001  online
disk02      auto:cdsdisk    TMP2      DISKGROUP001  online

 So

1> has there been any loss data as a result of deleting and recreating volume  lvol4a

2> If there is no data loss can I have the below as a spererate volume (vol_tmp) and mount the volume 2 )

 pl lvol4a-02    lvol4a       ENABLED  ACTIVE   2537355264 CONCAT  -        RW
sd TMP1-01   lvol4a-02    TMP1  0        1019148544 0       xiv0_40  ENA
sd TMP2-01   lvol4a-02    TMP2  0        1308491520 1019148544 xiv0_41 ENA
sd TMP1-02   lvol4a-02    TMP1  1019148544 209715200 2327640064 xiv0_40 ENA

they dont exist in the VG only below dm exists

dm TMP1      disk01      auto     65536    1274937088 -
dm TMP2      disk02      auto     65536    1308491520 -

Volume defragmentation

I need a solution

Hi guys,

I am a little curious about defragmentation. Probably someone can explain defragmentation.

First let me start what I have done so far:

1. Created a DG, Volume (1GB) etc (testing system only)

2. Created about 1000 1MB files

3. Deleted every 2nd file

And now I am curious. When I ran fsadm -E /local (/local is the mounted test volume of course) I get the following output:

...

    Free Extents By Size
           1:          2            2:          2            4:          3
           8:          7           16:          6           32:          6
          64:          5          128:          5          256:          6
         512:          3         1024:        326         2048:          2

...

It shows clearly 326 free 1024K extents. From my understanding the file system is fragmentated now? Because when I create a large file now it would use all the 1024K extents and not one 128M extent, two 64M extent etc? Am I wrong/right?

And how can I rearrange the extents (if it is possible). I have tried various fsadm options like -e, -d and -C but without success.

BTW:

pkginfo -l VRTSvxfs

...
    PSTAMP:  5.1.103.000-5.1SP1RP3_x86-2012-09-16-VERITAS-FS-142635-12
...

uname -a
SunOS sol10 5.10 Generic_142910-17 i86pc i386 i86pc

Any suggestions?

Symantec Partner Accreditation Interview for Storage Foundation 6.0 for Unix

I need a solution

I have successfully passed Symantec Technical Specialist assessment of Veritas Storage Foundation 6.0 for Unix with a very good score. I had already passed both sales certifications (SSE & SSE+) of Storage Foundation 6.0

While preparing for STS assessment, I thoroughly went through all the training videos and the SF admin guide (almost 60%).

Now Symantec has conducted my interview for technical accredition of my company as Specialist partner in Storage Management. Any suggestions regarding how to prepare for interview or which particular areas the interview will focus or some topic outlines that are important from interview perspective.

Any suggestions or guidance will be highly appreciated.

Thank You

I do not need a solution (just sharing information)

Hi, all.

We have released a set of articles that contain information about troubleshooting the "failed" disk status, as reported by vxdisk.

Here is the link:

"Failed" or "failed was" is reported by vxdisk
http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH200618

Since this is a broad topic, the "technote" is actually a set of about a dozen article that have been organized into a logical tree structure, with TECH200618 at its "root."

Let us know what you think!

Environment

OS = Windows 2008 R2 (64bit)

SFHA = 6.0.1

One Diskgroup with one volume configured and that volume configured for replication. Replication is running fine and we tried migration between both nodes which is also running fine.

Question

- I shutdown primary Node and takeover DR node which did successful.

- I start entering data on DR site node which is also going good.

- I start Primary Node. Now both sites nodes showing Primary Primary. In this situation in Linux I do fbsyc which make DR Site Node New Primary and make the Primary Site Node New DR node. But in windows under VEA i am not able to see the fbsync command. ANy suggestion will be appriciated

We had the same problem.  I also understand the technical procedure to disable/delete the service.   I also searched for the "runonce" script/executable but didn't find anything...

My question is how do we confirm that whatever needed to "runonce" actually ran and succeeded or if nothing really needed to run? and this really is just residue

here is the log output I have:

Campus cluster: disks bad tagged

I need a solution

Hello,

¿is it possible to change a disk tag without stopping the vxvm? Lets say we have a 2 node cluster in 2 sites: Y and T. The dg has 8 disks and the tag of 2 of them are wrong:

- disk 00 is tagged as T when should be Y
- disk 01 is tagged as Y when should be T

Both disks are 50 GB big and the DG has 130GB of free space.

Questions:

Can we just remove the disk and reattach them? how (there are volumes on them)?

Any easy way of exchanging the tags?

Regards,

joaquín

We change the scheduler option down the "/sys/block" path. In this instance we change it to noop but more often it is changed to deadline. However am confused about the scheduler file under VxVM3000 or VxDMPx. How does this interact with the block device scheduler settings?
